The Grote Markt in Kortrijk is the first marker on the map, with the old city hall at one corner of it. From there the route slips into the beguinage, a quiet enclosure of white houses, and then drops down to the Broel Towers at the water's edge. It is a self-guided murder mystery walking tour, and it runs entirely from your own phone. Kortrijk keeps everything close together, so nobody has to cover long distances: families with children, groups of friends, couples and colleagues all get round the route, and it can be played solo. Teams are a maximum of four people with a single phone between them, and a larger group buys more tickets and plays as several teams at the same time. There is no guide leading the way and no hour at which you are expected to start. How to play. There are four steps to work through first. Book the City Game. Check the instructions email. Download the Loquiz app. Start playing whenever you like. The case is the murder of Balthasar. You break codes, take photographs where the game asks for them and press digital characters whose versions of events differ. Between Kortrijk 1302 and the Groeninge Monument, and on the way over to the Texture museum, the suspects thin out. Two or more teams make it a race, which is the reason the game is often booked for teambuilding. Stop for a drink on the Grote Markt, return to it later, and finish the case in Kortrijk.
