In Ivalo the trail starts at the Inari municipal building in the village centre and reaches the Ivalo River within a few minutes on foot. Along the water it turns back towards the Petsamo Statue and the streets around it. It is a self-guided walking tour with a murder to solve, played entirely from your phone. Families with children, groups of friends, couples and colleagues all fit this format, and playing on your own works too. A team is four people at most, sharing one phone, so a bigger group buys extra tickets and plays as several teams. Ivalo is flat and quiet, the distances between clues are short, and outside the summer months warm clothing matters more than good walking shoes. No guide comes along and there is no set departure. How to play. Before the first clue in Ivalo, four things need to happen. Book the City Game. Check the instructions email. Download the Loquiz app. Start playing whenever you like. The case is the murder of Balthasar. You work through coded messages, photo tasks and statements from digital characters whose stories do not agree, with part of the evidence waiting near the church of the holy shepherd Nicholas. Each puzzle you solve narrows the field a little. If more than one team plays, the two end up racing each other, which is the reason this doubles as a teambuilding activity. Nothing stops you breaking for coffee and continuing later, and the case ends back in Ivalo where it started.
