You pick up the trail at Bab Bou Jeloud, the blue gate into the old city of Fez, and follow it into the lanes beyond. The route takes in the courtyards of the Dar Batha Museum and passes the Mausoleum of Moulay Idriss II deep in the medina. It is a self-guided walking tour with a murder to solve rather than a schedule to keep. Fez rewards slow walking: the medina is a maze of narrow lanes, some of them sloping, so wear shoes you can spend a couple of hours in. The game is built for families with children, groups of friends, couples and colleagues, with up to four people to a team and one phone between them. Larger parties split across extra tickets. On your own it works just as well, and nothing depends on a guide or a departure time. How to play. Before the first clue in Fez, four things need doing. Book the City Game. You crack codes, complete photo tasks and pick apart what digital characters tell you, some of it deliberately wrong. Evidence leads towards Borj Nord above the city and back down into the Quartier Mellah, where the last of the suspects has an address.
