The starting point is Canongate Kirk, low down on the Royal Mile, and the first instructions are collected in the kirkyard. The route then climbs the Mile towards St Giles' Cathedral before dropping into the closes and squares on either side of it. Edinburgh works well as a detective game because the ground itself is layered, with stairs, wynds and courtyards that hide as much as they show. This is a walking route through the old town of Edinburgh, so expect steps and slopes; it is still an easy outing for families with children, friends, couples and colleagues, and it can be played on your own. Up to four people form a team on a single phone, and groups larger than that buy extra tickets and split into teams.
