You begin at the city hall on Stationsplein and walk into old Delft within a few minutes. The trail runs along the canals to the Oude Kerk, crosses over to the Nieuwe Kerk and takes in Museum Prinsenhof Delft on the way. Played as a self-guided murder mystery game, it turns the quietest streets of Delft into working ground. The game suits families with children, groups of friends, couples and colleagues, and a lone player is at no disadvantage. Teams are one to four people on a single phone; larger groups take several tickets and walk separately. The centre of Delft is compact, flat and crossed by narrow bridges, so teams move slowly and run into each other often, which is half the point. No guide leads the way, and no start time is fixed. The case is the murder of Balthasar. Codes have to be worked out, photographs taken at particular spots, and digital characters questioned about where they were. One of them claims to have spent the hour near the Oostpoort; another was reportedly seen on the Beestenmarkt, and a third points you towards the Vermeer Centrum Delft. Not all three can be right.
