The trail starts at the DS Senanayake Monument in Colombo and runs south through the wide, tree-lined streets of the old quarter. On foot you cross Independence Square, pass the Colombo National Museum and cut through the lawns and old trees of Viharamahadevi Park. It is a self-guided murder mystery game, with the city itself standing in for the crime scene. The route suits families with children, groups of friends, couples and colleagues, and it works just as well on your own. A team is up to four people sharing a single phone, while a larger party buys more tickets and goes out as two or three teams. The heat and the busy junctions set the rhythm here, so most teams take the shaded side of the street between stops. Nobody waits on a guide, and there is no fixed hour at which you have to begin.
