The town hall of Charleroi is where the case begins. From there the route works its way around the upper town, past the Charleroi Belfry and on to the Basilica of Saint Christopher. The city supplies the streets; the detective game supplies everything else. Nothing is set out for you in advance, so you read, decide and walk on. The playing area sits on the higher ground of the centre, so expect a gentle slope or two rather than any real climbing, and the game stays comfortable for families with children, groups of friends, couples and colleagues. A team is one to four players sharing a phone; a larger party splits into competing teams. Solo players get the same case, and there is no guide and no fixed departure. How to play. The victim is Balthasar, and the file lands with you. Codes have to be broken, photographs taken at the right spots, and the statements of digital characters checked against one another. Around Place Charles II and the streets leading off it, the story fills in and the suspect list shortens. Send two teams out and Charleroi becomes a competition, which is what makes this a workable teambuilding activity. Stop for a break, resume when it suits, and close the file in Charleroi.
