The Grand Place is where the investigation starts in Brussels, under the guild houses on the north side of the square. The route then slips through the lanes to Manneken Pis, doubles back beneath the glass roof of the Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert and climbs towards the Mont des Arts. It is a self-guided murder mystery game played on foot, with the lower town as the setting. Those lower streets are narrow and busy, so expect to weave a little; the climb up to the Mont des Arts is the only real effort in Brussels. Families with children, groups of friends, couples and colleagues all manage it, and solo players do fine. A team is at most four people sharing one phone, with bigger parties splitting into several teams. No guide comes along and there is no fixed departure, so you start when the day suits. How to play. Part of the trail runs past the Cathédrale Saints-Michel-et-Gudule and through the quieter Place des Martyrs, where one alibi turns out to be thinner than it first sounded.
