Zappeion Hall, at the edge of the National Garden, is the first point on the map in Athens. From there the route passes the Temple of Olympian Zeus and Hadrian's Arch, then swings up to the Panathenaic Stadium. It is a self-guided murder mystery walking tour, and the whole case is played out in the street. Athens gives you long avenues and a few shaded stretches of garden, so the walking varies from one part of the route to the next; families with children, groups of friends, couples and colleagues all cope with it, and solo play is fine. A team is a maximum of four people sharing one phone, and larger groups buy more tickets and split up. Traffic around Syntagma Square is heavy, so teams usually step somewhere quieter to settle an answer. There is no guide and no fixed start. How to play. The set-up runs to four steps. Coded messages have to be unpicked, photo tasks completed and digital characters questioned, and none of them tells the story quite the same way. Between the Roman Agora and Monastiraki Square, and past the Holy Metropolitan Church, the field of suspects narrows. With several teams out at once, Athens turns into a competition, which is what makes the game suitable for teambuilding as well as a day out. Break for a meal, come back to the trail, and close the case in Athens.
