Marktplein de Hof is the starting point in Amersfoort, and the Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren rises over the rooftops a few streets away. From the square the route threads past the Sint-Joriskerk, along the water at the Havik and up to the Huis met de Paarse Ruitjes. This is a self-guided walking tour with a murder to solve rather than a commentary to listen to. Families with children, groups of friends, couples and work teams all fit the format, and solo play is a real option. Four people per team is the limit, sharing a single phone between them, and a group of twelve becomes three teams. The old centre of Amersfoort is small, flat and ringed by canals, so nobody gets far from anybody else, and with no guide and no fixed start time you set the rhythm yourself. How to play. The case is the murder of Balthasar, and it is built from coded messages, photo assignments and statements by digital characters who contradict one another. Some of it plays out around Groot Tinnenburg and the Elleboogkerk, some on the Varkensmarkt, and the answers accumulate until only one suspect is left standing. Several teams playing at the same time makes a contest of it, which is why companies use the game for teambuilding as much as families use it for a day out.
